KONTIKI HOUSE

Renovation of a beach cottage in Whiritoa, Coromandel. For a young family.

The design takes cues from the vernacular of a seaside resort town cottage, and then begins to dissolve the idea from the inside out.

The facade represents the pathological insecurity of colonial calm, the defining characteristic of the site. Ordered planes are disrupted in violent outbursts of colour.

Seaside kitsch, blue and white stripes are materialised as cladding panels and cover battens.

Six metre raking ceilings with full height windows fill the kitchen / dining space with soft, cool light all day. Black accents are carried throughout the interior.

Contrasting low height, warmly lit space in the living room. The rhythm of the facade is transposed to the interior.
